Why the star chamber is the dirtiest part of your rifle
Carbon bakes onto the eight locking lugs inside the barrel extension and packs into the recess behind them. A chamber brush bends away from exactly the spots that need it most, which is why the chamber still looks dirty after you brush it.
What the Talon does
The Talon is a stainless steel star chamber cleaning tool with a head machined to mate with those lugs. Push it in through the receiver until it seats, rotate it against the lugs, and pull it out. One full turn scrapes every lug eight times. The carbon collects in the recesses of the head, so you tap it clean and go again instead of pushing debris deeper.
- Works dry. No solvent needed, so it works at the range as well as on the bench. During a full cleaning it is the right first pass before a chamber mop and solvent.
- Folds in half. The handle folds back over the shaft, so it rides in a range bag, cleaning kit or MOLLE pouch.
- Takes a bore brush. The 8-32 threaded tip takes a standard bore brush for a deeper pass.
- Made in Michigan. Stainless steel scraping head, made in the USA by CAT Outdoors, the maker of the CAT M4 Tool. Patented design (U.S. Pat. 8,250,800).
Fits
Any rifle built on a 5.56 NATO barrel extension: 5.56, .223 Remington and .300 Blackout AR-15s, including pistols and SBRs. Not for AR-10 or .308 barrel extensions.
How to use it
- Clear the rifle. Remove the bolt carrier and charging handle.
- Open the Talon and insert it in place of the bolt carrier.
- Rotate the handle slowly while you push it in until the head seats in the lugs.
- Press the shaft sideways with your support hand. That offset keeps the head in the lugs as you pull.
- Pull gently to the rear while rotating. Tap the head clean. Repeat if needed.

If the bolt carrier is the problem, you want the M4 Tool. If the lugs are the problem, the Talon scrapes them without pads to buy again.
Common questions
Does the Talon fit .300 Blackout?
Yes. .300 Blackout rifles use the same 5.56 bolt and barrel extension, so the locking lugs are identical.
Does it fit AR-10 or .308 rifles?
No. The .308 barrel extension is larger. The CAT 762 Tool covers the AR-10 bolt carrier; there is no Talon for .308 lugs yet.
Do I need solvent?
No. The Talon scrapes dry. For a full cleaning, run it first, then a chamber mop with solvent.
Will it scratch the barrel extension?
No. The head is machined to ride on the lug faces and only removes carbon. Thousands sold since 2013 with no reports of damage.
What is the 8-32 thread for?
A standard bore brush threads onto the tip, so one tool does the lugs and then the chamber walls.
How is it different from the M4 Tool?
The M4 Tool scrapes the bolt, carrier and firing pin. The Talon scrapes the locking lugs in the upper. Together they are the Field Kit.
